Bro. Rodney Pelt represented Alpha Tau with purpose and presence during a meaningful visit to Westlawn Middle School, where he engaged sixth grade students in a candid and impactful discussion about character, responsibility, and the realities of life in the digital age.
Addressing the students directly, Bro. Pelt spoke about his book, The Social Media Hero, and the lessons embedded within its pages. He shared the story of Rodney, a young boy who confronts the harsh reality of cyberbullying after discovering a fake social media account created to spread rumors about him. Through the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Johnson, Rodney learns to navigate adversity with resilience, integrity, and self awareness, themes that Bro. Pelt thoughtfully connected to the students’ own experiences.
Rather than delivering a traditional reading, Bro. Pelt fostered an open dialogue, encouraging students to reflect on how they show up in online spaces, how they treat others, and how they can respond when faced with negativity or conflict. He emphasized that true heroism lies in choosing empathy over cruelty, courage over silence, and accountability over avoidance.
Students listened attentively as he highlighted the importance of mentorship, self discovery, and standing up against bullying in all its forms. His message reinforced that anyone, regardless of age, has the potential to be a leader and a positive influence within their community.
The visit culminated with a special moment for every sixth grader, as each student received a signed copy of The Social Media Hero to take home. The gesture served not only as a gift, but as a lasting reminder of the values Bro. Pelt shared throughout the day.
Alpha Tau is proud to support initiatives that promote literacy, youth empowerment, and meaningful community engagement. Bro. Rodney Pelt’s visit to Westlawn Middle School exemplifies the chapter’s commitment to uplifting young minds and reinforcing the principles of service, leadership, and integrity.
